Each visual field is split so that each side of the brain “sees” half of each visual field. This means that perceived visual files are cut in half, with the right visual field from both eyes going to the right side of the brain and the left visual field from both eyes going to the left side of the brain. This structure ensures that each brain hemisphere has it own visual field representation. In of the event of brain injury, one hemisphere is still able to process visual signals from each eye. The visual signals from the optic nerves are then projected to an intermediate brain area called the lateral geniculate.

In short, these four layers sense what CHAPTER 2 THE PHYSIOLOGY OF SEEING AND PERCEPTION F IGURE Retina Layers. 3 F IGURE Lateral Inhibition. 4 27 3D LIGHTING 28 F IGURE Optic pathways. 5 is being seen. The last two layers sense contrast changes, which detect object location, image flicker, and motion detection. The cells in the lateral geniculate could be considered feature detectors. However, these neural detectors are not passive. 6. This ability shows that the higher visual functions sometimes generate signals to make sense of the world the human perceives.

When you followed your index finger in the previous demonstration, your eyes smoothly tracked the object in motion, ignoring all other stimuli. This is the so-called smooth pursuit, the fifth type of eye movement. This type of movement happens only in relatively slow to moderate speed tracking. When we are using our eyes to follow a person walking across the CHAPTER 2 THE PHYSIOLOGY OF SEEING AND PERCEPTION room, we use smooth pursuit eye movement. If the object being tracked is moving fast, the eye uses a combination of saccadic and smooth pursuit eye movements.
