It is almost invariably a suave, unobtrusive music with no grand effects: not lending dramatic accompaniment to the peaks and valleys of intense emotion, as in earlier Romantic poetry, but swathing them in a misty mood so that one can no longer be sure of their outline or feel the acuteness of their contrast. And yet lyricism is not lost: in the background is always the nagging presence of a simple and universal human emotion, melancholy, nostalgia, distress, remorse. No other French poet has enlisted such resources of rhyme, assonance and alliteration, coupled with the flexibilities of rhythm and verse-form, to drown the intellect, steep it in sound and leave it powerless to resist an elementary poignancy of feeling.

It is here that we see him putting his qualities as a musician and a landscape painter at the service of a deeper spiritual dimension ; and the conflict of lucidity and inner obscurity, self-denial and escapist self-abandonment, takes on a new richness. There is also the humorous Verlaine, the poet of caprices: the satirical portraits, spiced with colourful vocabulary, of the early Poemes saturniens (1866); the mock-gaiety, urbane ironies and ambiguous game of masks in the Fetes galantes; the chameleonlike self-parody and the scabrous humour of his later works.
